Impressionism and related art styles have had a big impact on me. To a large extent, impressionist works are paintings of the light the artist observed, and the impression that light made on their eye. Not surprisingly, I have tried at various times to emulate the look of these paintings in my photos. But what makes an Impressionist painting? Impressionist works are sometimes described as having five defining visual characteristics: rough brush strokes, vivid colours, flattening of perspective, distortion of form, and overall lightness. The images here all partake of some or all of these characteristics, but most importantly emphasize the quality of light over other elements of the image.
